Four Things to Know About Your Vehicle’s Oil

Most of us stick to changing our vehicle’s oil when that warning light flashes on our dashboard and don’t give it another thought the rest of the time. However, it’s important to understand a little bit more about your car’s oil. Here are four things you should know:

When should I get it changed? As soon as you see that warning light, don’t delay—get your oil changed as soon as possible. Waiting can really cause damage to your vehicle and end up costing you in repairs. Better yet, instead of waiting for the dashboard light, check your vehicle’s owner’s manual. It’s the best indicator for when to get an oil change.

Why should I get it changed? Your vehicle’s oil is what keeps everything running smoothly. Oil lubricates moving parts, keeps them clean, and prevents them from overheating. Keeping up with oil changes for your car will help ensure your engine lives a long life.

What type of oil does my car need? Once again, your owner’s manual is the best source for this. The manufacturer will recommend or require a type of oil for your vehicle. If you don’t have an owner’s manual, check with our service technicians or find an online discussion group for your vehicle model.

How often should I check the oil levels? We recommend checking out your oil levels once a month. Make sure your car is parked on flat ground and try to avoid checking when your engine has been recently running, as there can be some hot spots. Check the dipstick (found under the hood) by removing it, wiping any oil off, sticking it back in, and out again. If the oil is below the minimum mark, bring it in for an oil change.
